Green Aloha grows all its cannabis on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. Since 2016, they’ve delivered clean, safe, quality medicine to residents and visiting medical cannabis patients. Green Aloha employs 20 people between its production facility and two storefronts.
To comply with new state regulatory requirements, Green Aloha needed to upgrade its labeling process in a short amount of time. The revised labeling regulations they needed to meet aimed to provide patients with clearer information about dosage, cannabinoid content, ingredients, and allergens. Now, the information Green Aloha previously listed on an insert with packages needed to be included on their small package labels.
With 20 medical cannabis products and multiple pieces of data required on each label, their existing label printing process fell short. Plus, Green Aloha only had two employees available to tackle this critical compliance problem.
“Before the compliance change, our labels were probably fully compliant and accurate 50% of the time. Then the rule changed and that dropped down to 5%, so we needed to improve labeling quickly,” explained Steven Yost, Director of Cultivation at Green Aloha.
Green Aloha turned to TEKLYNX for help after learning about their RFID and barcode labeling software solutions at a cannabis tradeshow. “Green Aloha gave us a call on a Wednesday in a bit of a panic because they needed to print nearly 5,000 labels by Monday and were out of compliance with the Hawaii State Department of Health,” explained Scott Fabian, Product Integration Developer at TEKLYNX.
Over the next two days, Scott set up the Confident LIMS label printing form powered by TEKLYNX, designed four label templates in CODESOFT with 18 – 24 variable data fields (net weight, percentage of each cannabinoid, dosage, etc.) and a QR code dynamically linked to sample test results, and showed Green Aloha how it all worked. By Monday, CODESOFT and the printing form were installed, and Green Aloha was independently printing compliant cannabis labels just in time for a visit from the Hawaii State Department of Health.
The printing form leveraged an API (Application Programming Interface) to seamlessly apply compliant data to the labels. This bridged the gap between data from Green Aloha’s laboratory information management system (Confident LIMS) and label design in CODESOFT. This innovative solution helped Green Aloha significantly reduce manual tasks, data discrepancies, and compliance challenges.
Green Aloha successfully achieved compliance with the revised labeling regulations and avoided a potential shutdown and the loss of thousands of dollars each day they’d need to be closed. They emphasized how the Hawaii State Department of Health showed up at their facility on Monday to shut things down until further notice due to non-compliant labels and were impressed by how quickly Green Aloha was able to bring their labels into compliance.
“I can’t express how simple this whole process was because of the outstanding support TEKLYNX provided,” said Yost. “Most questions were answered within five minutes and no issue took more than a day to get resolved. That type of support is invaluable.”
With the Confident LIMS label printing form powered by TEKLYNX, Green Aloha also reached 100% labeling accuracy without having to hire additional staff to support the more complex labeling needs.
Green Aloha plans to continue growing its medical cannabis business and successful partnership with TEKLYNX.
