QR Code Barcode Generator Software

EASILY GENERATE QR CODES WITH TEKLYNX LABEL DESIGN SOFTWARE

QR code generator wizard in barcode label design software solution CODESOFTQR codes, a type of 2D barcode, are gaining popularity due to their ease of use and impressive data storage. They consist of an array of black and white squares that typically store URLs and can only be read by smartphone cameras, some tablets, and 2D barcode scanners. Because of the amount of data they can store, more businesses are using QR codes in their labeling processes to improve traceability in the supply chain.

QR codes can be created in any of our three label designers, LABEL MATRIX, LABELVIEW, or CODESOFT. With helpful wizards, the barcode is generated quickly after you type in the data, all without leaving the software. In just a few clicks you can easily make the type of barcode or label you need.

What is a QR code?

QR code is short for Quick Response Code, and they typically store URLs that can only be read by smartphone or tablet cameras or 2D barcode scanners. QR codes can encode up to 7,366 characters of numeric data, much more than the traditional 1D (or linear) barcode, and can be scanned in any direction while also partially damaged up to 30%. With their ability to hold more data than any other type of barcode, they are becoming one of the most popular barcodes used. Not only are they more efficient, but less error-prone, which helps labeling operations.

What are QR codes used for?

QR codes are commonly used for:

  • Inventory management in manufacturing and logistics for full traceability
  • Inventory tracking in retail
  • Product labels
  • Menus in restaurants
  • Coupons or event tickets
  • Business cards and marketing campaigns

It's becoming more common to see QR codes replacing the standard 1D barcode or appearing alongside them on packaging. This allows for various purposes such as offering detailed product information, user manuals, or instructions.

What are the benefits of QR codes?

QR codes can encode a significant amount of data compared to traditional 1D barcodes, which is one of the reasons for popularity. Some benefits of QR barcodes are:

  • The ability to track, update, and remove products from the supply chain
  • View product information
  • Store more data in a smaller space compared to the traditional 1D barcode
  • The ability to be scanned in any direction with minimal hardware
  • Creates paperless and contactless interactions
  • Enables complete traceability of workflow in management

What is Sunrise 2027?

Sunrise 2027 is an initiative for distributors, retailers, and consumers to start implementing more 2D barcodes because they hold more data and provide more information for the end user. 2D barcodes will start to be accepted at Point-Of-Sale (POS) or Point-Of-Care. By the end of 2027 retailers will need to ensure their POS systems can scan both traditional 1D barcodes and 2D barcodes. After 2027, product packages will no longer require a 1D barcode, although 2D barcodes will not be mandated yet. Learn more about Sunrise 2027 from GS1.

What is the difference between 1D and 2D barcodes?

1D barcodes are traditional linear barcodes with vertical lines while 2D barcodes are two-dimensional, shaped like squares or rectangles and consist of both vertical and horizontal lines. The main differentiator is the data capacity. 1D barcodes, like EAN/UPC, are only capable of carrying a product identifier known as the Global Trade Item Number® (GTIN®).

2D barcodes can carry additional data, such as expiration date, batch/lot number, serial number, and more. In addition to carrying more data, 2D barcodes are likely to be smaller in size than and include features, like built-in error correction that add to their reliability.

How do QR codes store information?

Each black and white square on a QR code has a function. The squares, also known as finder patterns, hold different information, and once scanned by a smartphone, or tablet camera or 2D scanner, the unique pattern translates into human-readable data in a few seconds. They are adaptable in size, depending on the amount of data being encoded, so they can fit on many different types of packaging. QR codes are more universal since each black and white square can hold various types of information.
